It can work when...
- Every old tile is firmly stuck: tap them, and a hollow sound means it's loose.
- The surface is flat and the old tiles aren't cracked.
- The wall can take the extra weight. Two layers of tile and adhesive can be too heavy, especially on plasterboard.
- The extra thickness won't clash with doors, skirting, sockets or the bath edge.
Don't tile over when...
- It's inside a shower or wet room: the old tiles can hide leaks and you can't tank properly.
- Any tiles are loose, cracked or damp, or the grout is mouldy underneath.
- The new tiles are large and heavy, or natural stone.
- Floor tiles would raise the floor enough to catch doors or create a trip step.
How we do it when it's right
We check every tile, fix or remove any loose ones, clean and key the glaze, apply a special primer for tiling over tiles, and use a flexible adhesive. We'll always tell you honestly which option your room needs.
