Large-format tiles: what you need to know

Big tiles mean fewer grout lines and a premium look. They also show every bump, so the preparation matters most.

What counts as large format

Any tile with a side of 600 mm or more, from 600 × 600 up to slabs of 1200 × 2400 mm and beyond. Prices run from about £20 per m² for marble-effect 1200 × 600 tiles to £170 or more for full slabs.

Why they need more care

  • Flatness. Walls and floors need to be very flat, or the tile edges won't line up. We check with a long straight edge and level first.
  • Full adhesive cover. We back-butter every tile so there are no hollow spots that crack later.
  • Levelling clips hold neighbouring tiles flush while the adhesive sets.
  • The right layout. Long tiles bow slightly in the middle, so we lay them a third offset, never half.
  • Two people. Slabs can weigh up to 40 kg and need lifting frames. Our team is equipped for it.

Is your room suitable?

Most are, after preparation. Very uneven old walls may need boarding, and timber floors need overboarding to stop movement. We'll tell you what's needed when we visit.
