Choosing your grout colour

Grout is up to a tenth of what you see on a wall of small tiles. The right colour makes the tiles; the wrong one fights them.

Three ways to go

  • Match the tile for a calm, seamless look. Best for large tiles, marble effects and small rooms.
  • Contrast (for example dark grout with white metro) to show off the pattern. Best for herringbone, metro and hexagons.
  • Go one shade darker than the tile: the safe choice that still hides everyday marks.

Keeping it clean

  • Bright white grout on a floor will discolour. Choose silver grey, mid grey or a warm sand instead.
  • In showers and kitchens, ask about epoxy or high-performance grout: it resists stains and mould far better.
  • Natural stone needs sealing before grouting, so the grout doesn't stain the stone.

Joint width

Rectified (precisely cut) tiles can take 2 mm joints. Standard tiles usually need 3 mm, handmade tiles and terracotta wider still. Thinner joints make the grout colour matter less.

Try before you decide
